HUMANITARIAN RESPONSE TO CRISIS IN SYRIA AND THE REGION

According to the United Nations, the conflict in Syria has affected more than three million people since March 2011 and catalyzed a humanitarian crisis of increasing severity.[1] The United Nations Human Rights Council has cited that the crisis over the last few months has left thousands of Syrians dead or displaced, and in urgent need of international assistance.[2] Syrians fleeing violence are seeking refuge in border areas of neighboring states with limited access to food, health care, and livelihoods. The growing intensity of the conflict within Syria and the lack of resources available in border areas are hindering the provision of vital humanitarian relief.

International Medical Corps Response

International Medical Corps is currently on the ground in Syria and addressing displaced and refugee populations in Lebanon and Jordan. In collaboration with Syrian Arab Red Crescent, we are operating mobile clinics and supporting static health clinics in Damascus, where we have been providing health care services to the local population and Iraqi refugees since 2008.

In the region, International Medical Corps has teams in Lebanon and Jordan who are responding to the influx of those fleeing violence in Syria. In Lebanon, we are providing services to Syrians in northern Lebanon in collaboration with UNHCR and the Lebanese High Relief Commission. Primary activities include the provision of primary health care through static and mobile clinics, referral services for refugees in need of hospital-level care, and other social services. In Jordan we are assessing refugee needs and have provided some health services. International Medical Corps has a longstanding presence in Jordan and Lebanon working with vulnerable local populations as well as other refugee populations and is well-equipped to rapidly provide humanitarian aid for Syria.

International Medical Corps in the Middle East

International Medical Corps has an extensive presence in the Middle East that began in Iraq in 2003 and has since expanded into Lebanon, Jordan, Syria, Gaza, Libya, Tunisia, Turkey, and Yemen. International Medical Corps has been a key first responder in several major crises and conflicts in the region. International Medical Corps’ strategy since its inception in 1984 has been to implement life-saving emergency response operations, and subsequently transition to a range of long-term capacity building initiatives in sectors such as health systems strengthening and service provision, mental health and psychosocial assistance, maternal and child health, protection, women’s empowerment, community development, and water, sanitation, and hygiene.

On Monday, January 16, more than 20 students from Fordson HS, Northville HS, HFCC and U of M accepted this challenge on MLK Day by organizing Zaman’s donation warehouse and helping us prepare for another year of providing Hope for Humanity. What a tribute to the man and the message we remember on this day!
